MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two first half goals were the difference as Maryland scored a 2-0 win over 14th-ranked West Virginia in women’s soccer exhibition action Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Terrapins held a 5-2 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes and held a 9-7 edge after 90 minutes of play.
“Our goal coming in was to find out what our strengths and weaknesses were. And we did that to some extent,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown.
“We have a young team and it was important to see where we stand. We have a lot of work to do and we need to get better before we play Ohio State next week.”
WVU’s best scoring chance of the first half came in the 41st minute on a shot from sophomore Blake Miller. Miller fired a shot inside the penalty kick area on a cross from sophomore Chelsey Corroto. Maryland goalkeeper Mary Casey came up with a diving save in working a scoreless first half.
The Mountaineers came out stronger in the second half, including a scoring opportunity in the 50th minute. Corroto made another perfect cross, finding freshman Bry McCarthy inside the box. McCarthy slotted a ball just wide of the left post.
West Virginia nearly found the back of the net with 14 minutes remaining as Miller sent a ball just wide and into the side netting on a cross from junior Megan Mischler.
Several Mountaineers saw action in the lone exhibition match of the preseason. West Virginia looks to replace six starters, including three along the back line.
WVU opens the 2009 season against Ohio State on Sunday, Aug. 23. Fans attending the home opener can pick up a free 2009 WVU women’s soccer poster featuring Mallory Beck, Kerri Butler, Erica Henderson and Nicole Mailloux.
