The Fox Soccer Channel Men’s College Match of the Week, which will be held at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, is scheduled to take place on Oct. 9, with an 8 p.m. start.
"We're very pleased to be able to represent our university and our state on Fox Soccer Channel for the third year running,” coach Marlon LeBlanc says. “We hope that we can attain the same results that we have in the first two years when we got to play on national television."
In last year’s match in Storrs, Conn., the Mountaineers prevailed over the No. 7-ranked Huskies, 1-0, courtesy of then-freshman Alex Silva’s goal at the 29:05 mark. Silva’s score, which came in front of 4,407 fans, was the first of his career.
Back in 2006, No. 20-ranked WVU dropped top-ranked Connecticut, 1-0, in Morgantown. Off a free kick from Dan Stratford, Jason Bristol sent a header past Huskies goalkeeper Josh Ford for the lone score of the game.
WVU is one of four BIG EAST squads to be featured on Fox Soccer Channel’s 2009 lineup.
WVU’s first televised match will air on West Virginia PBS on Sept. 6 against Buffalo. It will be the squad’s second contest of the WVU/NIKE Classic, with kick off slated for 4 p.m. at Dick Dlesk.
Following an exhibition match against Big Ten opponent, Michigan, on Aug. 23 at 1 p.m., the Mountaineers officially open their season with the annual WVU/NIKE Classic, presented by Jerseys Subs, on Sept. 4. WVU will play host to 2006 national champion UC-Santa Barbara at 8 p.m.
