MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Ed Pastilong today announced the schedule for the upcoming 2009-10 men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams.
“Vic Riggs has once again put together a challenging and exciting schedule,” says Pastilong. “After two straight trips to the NCAA Championships, we will look forward to what both the men and women can accomplish this winter.”
After traveling for the majority of last season, fans in Morgantown will get to see the team on five separate occasions.
Last season, the men’s team placed 34th in the NCAA Championships and this season will take on five 2008 NCAA Championship participants, including home meets against Cincinnati, Louisville and Virginia Tech.
The women had four NCAA Championships swimmers last season and will host five 2008 NCAA Championships teams, as well. Two of those teams, Louisville and Virginia Tech, will both be traveling to Morgantown.
“I look forward to the challenges and success this dual and championship meet schedule presents for our teams this season,” says coach Vic Riggs. “We have renewed some rivalries and added some new BIG EAST teams to our schedule.”
After the annual Blue and Gold Meet on Oct. 3 in the WVU Natatorium, the women will open regular season action hosting Marshall on Oct. 17 at noon.
Both squads will travel to State College, Pa., on Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. to battle Penn State in a dual meet with the women also swimming against Colgate in a double-dual meet.
The squads will then host a back-to-back meets against Cincinnati and Louisville the first weekend in November. The Louisville meet will also be the same day the Mountaineers take on the Cardinal on the football field. The swim meet time is yet to be determined.
The following weekend, West Virginia will travel for a pair of dual meets in a combined meet with Villanova on Nov. 13 at 5 p.m., and then the women will take on Rutgers the following day at a time to be announced.
After participating in the Ohio State Invitational from Dec. 3-6, West Virginia will travel to Cocoa Beach, Fla., from Dec. 30-Jan. 6 for a training trip. This is the second consecutive season the Mountaineers have gone on a winter training trip. An opponent will be announced at a later date. Last season the squad trained with Arizona and then faced the Wildcats in a dual meet.
Pitt comes to town on Jan. 9 for an 11 a.m. contest with the Mountaineers looking for redemption on last year’s nail-biting loss to the Panthers.
Both squads return to action on Jan. 24 when they travel to College Park, Md., to take on Maryland. The following weekend the regular season with Virginia Tech and Duquesne coming to Morgantown completes the regular season.
WVU begins postseason action with the 2010 BIG EAST Championships hosted by Pitt. The diving events will be held the week before the swimming events from Feb. 12-14, with the swimming events to follow from Feb. 17-20. Both will be held at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh.
The divers will then travel to one of five zone diving regional competitions in mid-March looking to qualifying for NCAAs. The women's NCAA Championships will be held on March 18-20 at Purdue, while the men's national meet will take place on March 25-27 at Ohio State.
