MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University sophomore Andy Lamson has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).
The men’s at-large team honor is a first for Lamson, a business and economics major with a 4.0 GPA. He is only one of two rifle selections to the three teams, as Nevada’s Andrew Hickey was named to the first team.
“Andy is such a hard worker and really puts 100 percent into everything he does,” coach Jon Hammond says. “This is just a reward for his hard work. Andy has very good time management and is very dedicated to both his sport and his studies. He really proves that hard work pays off, and I am delighted for him.”
“I’m honored to receive this award,” Lamson says. “Hopefully I can receive the honor again next year, but work my way up to the first team.”
The Colchester, Vt., native has accumulated several academic honors in just two years with the Mountaineers, as he was named a 2009 Great American Rifle Conference scholar athlete, his second-straight honor and an award he shared with teammate Kyle Smith. Additionally, he was named to the 2008 Collegiate Rifle Coaches All-Academic Team.
Lamson, a three-time National Rifle Association All-American, played an integral part in the Mountaineers’ 14th NCAA Championship this past season, as he finished third in air rifle with a score of 689.7. He also paced WVU throughout the year with a 1,164.07 combined score season average.
In addition to achieving an individual school record in prone (200), Lamson also contributed to the squad’s school record smallbore (2,319), air rifle (2,359) and team (4,677) scores.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his current institution and be nominated by his sports information director.
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
