MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former West Virginia University baseball player Levi Maxwell threw a no-hitter in the opener of a doubleheader on Friday, June 19, to lead the Winston-Salem Dash of the Carolina League over the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 4-0.
Pitching at the Advanced A professional level for the White Sox minor league affiliate, Maxwell became the first pitcher in three years to throw a no-hitter in the Carolina League. He finished the evening tossing seven scoreless innings and allowing three walks with two strikeouts. Maxwell also picked off two base runners.
It is the first no-hitter for Winston-Salem since Delvin Lantigua combined with three relievers to beat Myrtle Beach on April 15, 2001.
The former WVU pitcher was drafted in the 18th round by the White Sox in 2007. He had immediate success with the Class A Kannapolis Intimidators last season, compiling a 15-5 record with a 3.47 ERA. He shared the South Atlantic League lead in wins and complete games (2).
Maxwell, a right-hander, pitched at WVU in 2004 and 2006-07. He threw 121 innings, threw three complete games and recorded 73 strikeouts in his three-year collegiate career.
