MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Mike Carey announced today the addition of a second transfer for the 2009-10 season.
Tonia (pronounced tuh-knee-uh) Williams, a 6-1, guard from Warner Robins, Ga., has signed her grant-in-aid and is transferring to WVU from South Carolina. She will sit out the upcoming year in compliance with NCAA transfer rules and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
“Tonia is a perimeter player that gives us great length on both ends of the court,” Carey says. “She’s capable of scoring from different areas all over the floor. With her sitting out this year, she’ll get to learn our system and I expect her to become a great player for us in the future.”
Last season at South Carolina, Williams appeared in 11 games, with one start, and averaged 5.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per contest. She scored a career-best 13 points and eight grabbed rebounds at Arkansas.
Williams attended Houston County High School, where she was the 2008 class 5A player of the year and a first-team all-state performer. She helped Houston County to three straight regional championships and averaged 20 points and 14 rebounds per game as a junior, earning a spot on the Georgia Writers Association all-State team. She also played for the Nike Elite AAU team.
