Women's Basketball: Porcha Promoted

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Mike Carey announced today that assistant coach George Porcha has been named associate head coach.
“George has done an excellent job for this program and is definitely very deserving,” Carey says. “He’s an excellent motivator on the court and, off the court, he’s a tremendous recruiter and is a key cog in the family atmosphere we have with our young ladies. I look forward to our continued work in taking this program to the next level.”
“I’m thrilled and honored in the confidence coach Carey has shown in me,” Porcha said. “In just one short year here in Morgantown I’ve grown to love WVU and I’m very eager to have a hand in the continued growth of this program. We have a lot of work to do but we are definitely headed in the right direction.”
A Spring Valley, N.Y., native, Porcha will enter his second season on the staff this upcoming year after helping the Mountaineers to an 18-15 record and a second round appearance in the WNIT. He will continue to assist with all other daily aspects in running the program. He coached the post players last season and was an integral in helping WVU sign a top 20 recruiting class for this coming season.
Porcha came to WVU after serving one season as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. Prior to his tenure with the Hokies he served as head varsity girls coach at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va., from 2004-07. In 2006, Porcha led T.C. Williams to a second-place finish in the Northern Region and to the Virginia State Elite Eight tournament.
He guided the squad to an undefeated Patriot District Championship and was named the District Coach of the Year for his efforts. Porcha's 2007 squad also captured the Patriot District title. Several of his players at T.C. Williams later played at the collegiate level. Academically, Porcha served as a special education teacher for two years and was the assistant athletic director in 2007.
