Malikah Willis joined the Mountaineer staff in June, 2009, after serving two years as an assistant women's coach at Norfolk State. At Norfolk State she served as the team’s out-of-state recruiting coordinator, team travel coordinator and was responsible for the development of the post players.
Prior to Norfolk State, Willis spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Elizabeth City State, helping the Lady Vikings to a 21-10 record, the CIAA tournament championship game and an at-large berth to the NCAA South Atlantic Regional during the 2006-07 season.
Willis also had assistant coaching positions at the University of Illinois-Chicago (2000-02), Chicago State (2002-03) and Cheyney University (2003-04).
A native of Queens, N.Y., Willis played at Christ the King High, where she was a teammate of former Los Angeles Spark, current Atlanta Dream and Tennessee All-American Chamique Holdsclaw. At the end of her prep career, Willis was named a first team Parade All-American and was a part of Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer’s 1994 recruiting class at Iowa that was ranked No. 1 in the country.
The Hawkeyes captured consecutive Big Ten tournament championships in 1995 and 1996 and a regular season championship in 1995. A four-year letterwinner for Iowa, Willis earned bachelor’s degrees in media studies and African-American studies in 1998. She also played professionally for Color Cap Tybnik of Poland and Tapiola Honka of Finland in 1999 and Brazil’s Santa Maria Club in 2000.
Willis is a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, and also holds memberships with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and the Black Coaches Association.
