MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s basketball guard Darryl “Truck” Bryant is one of 17 college players selected to attend the 2009 USA U-19 National Team Trials. The three-day trial will be held June 16-18 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Bryant will be competing for one of 12 roster spots on the 2009 edition of the USA U-19 World Championship Team.
“I think this will be one of the greatest experiences of my life,” Bryant said. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to represent West Virginia University on the USA Basketball Team.”
Invitations were extended by the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee. Athletes eligible for the team must have been born on or after Jan. 1, 1990, be enrolled in a college or university and have NCAA eligibility.
A Brooklyn, N.Y., native, Bryant will be joined by two players from the BIG EAST in Connecticut’s Kemba Walker and Villanova’s Dominic Cheek.
Other invitees include Wake Forest’s Al-Farouq Aminu, Duke’s Seth Curry, Kansas’ Tyshawn Taylor, Florida’s Kenny Boynton and Mississippi’s Terrico White.
The USA Basketball Men’s Junior National team Committee, chaired by Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, consists of Washington coach Lorenzo Romar, Illinois coach Bruce Weber, North Carolina coach Roy Williams and athlete representative Jay Williams, a member of the 2002 USA World Championship Team.
Pitt coach Jamie Dixon will head the U-19 World Championship Team, and he will be assisted by Southern Illinois coach Chris Lowery and Purdue coach Matt Painter.
Bryant, who is coming off his rookie campaign, played in all 35 contests for WVU, starting 28 of them. He averaged 9.8 points and 2.7 assists per game.
Finalists for the squad will be selected following the trials. Training camp for the selected finalists begins June 19, with the 12-man roster being announced prior to the teams’ departure for New Zealand on June 25.
