MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Ed Pastilong has announced that the Mountaineers have added UNLV to its 2010 schedule, will extend the current contract with Maryland another two years and switch the locations for the Florida State series.
Next year’s home match up against UNLV will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools and seventh time the Mountaineers have faced a school which hails from the Mountain West Conference. West Virginia has faced Colorado State (3-1), TCU (1-0) and Utah (0-1). The Mountaineers last played a school from the Mountain West Conference in 1984 when they defeated TCU, 31-14, in the Bluebonnet Bowl.
West Virginia was already scheduled to play Maryland in 2010 and 2011 and now adds 2012 and 2013 to its future slates. The Mountaineers last faced the Terps in 2007 at College Park, and came away with a 31-14 win. The border rivalry has always been very competitive. Maryland won four straight in the series from 2001-2004 before West Virginia bounced back to win the last four meetings and take a slim 23-21-2 series advantage dating back to 1919.
WVU and Florida State are scheduled to play in 2012 and 2013. The Mountaineers will now travel to Tallahassee, Fla., in 2012 and will then play the 2013 meeting in Morgantown. The teams have played two games previously, and the Seminoles hold a 2-0 lead in the series which started in the 1982 Gator Bowl with a 31-12 Florida State win. The two schools met again in the 2004 Gator Bowl with FSU winning that match-up 30-18.
West Virginia opens the 2009 season on Sept. 5 against Liberty at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium.
