MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer player Robin Rushton has been named a National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American. The NSCA has recognized 207 collegiate athletes from 116 schools this year for their dedication and proficiency regarding strength training and conditioning.
“Robin was a cornerstone in our success this season, culminating a great career at West Virginia as a result of an iron work ethic,” says Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Jerry Handley. “Robin had major foot surgery in the spring and through her consistent efforts with weights, rehab and conditioning, she was able to come back nearly two months ahead of schedule. It was an honor to be involved with Robin’s senior season.”
“This honor just sums up Robin’s character and how hard she worked in the weight room, on the field and in the classroom,” says Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “What a great honor for her.”
Rushton was named the team’s most defensive player as a senior, guiding the Mountaineer back line to a school record 13 shutouts as an outside back. She helped WVU’s defense allow only four goals in 11 conference games this year – the fewest by any BIG EAST team in either division. The Scarborough, Ontario, native also earned NSCAA Scholar All-EAST Region and ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District honors.
A four-year starter and 2008 team captain, Rushton has started 85 matches in her career, the most by a defender in school history. She helped WVU defenses post 43 shutouts over the past four seasons while amassing a four-year record of 58-18-14.
This is the 30th year of the NSCA recognition program. Teammate Kelsey Fowler was named an NSCA All-American two years ago.
