MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia Rowing team is set to begin the 2009 season on Saturday, March 28, with a trip to the Murphy Cup hosted by Temple on Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa.
“The Murphy Cup is a rather large event for this early in the racing season,” Coach Jimmy King says. “Competition includes many of the schools that will return to the Schuylkill River in six weeks for the Dad Vail Regatta in May, so competing at the Murphy Cup will not only help us gauge how we're performing at the start of the season, but how we progress in comparison to many of these same schools.”
This season the Mountaineers will have five entries at the Murphy Cup, including the Varsity 4+, the Varsity 8+, the Novice 8+ and two entries in the Novice 4+ event.
The Varsity 8+ race, will feature 24 total entries, as WVU is set to face Colgate, Bucknell, Temple, Jacksonville and Robert Morris in heat one.
In their last trip to the Murphy Cup in 2006, the Varsity 8+ boat led the team with a third-place finish in their heat, while the Novice 8+ took second in their heat with a time of 5:59.51.
