MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team fell to BIG EAST foe Syracuse, 1-6, this evening at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.

“We looked very timid tonight for about an hour,” Coach Marc Walters says. “It was disappointing because we overcame them in the doubles. Their game is about attacking the net and getting in your face. We stood and looked them in the eye and won the doubles point and had momentum going into singles play.”

Despite the loss, the Mountaineers (1-4, 0-1 BIG EAST) took the doubles point as Stephanie LaFortune and Monique Burton defeated Ashley Spicer and Chelsea Jones 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 2 spot.

Olga Elkin and Veronica Cardenas then defeated Simone Kalhorn and Alessondra Parra 8-4, to give them a 5-0 record at the No. 3 spot this season.

The Mountaineers continue play with a match against conference rival Pitt at 4 p.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
