MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 20 West Virginia University gymnastics team opens its two-week homestand and plays host to Kentucky Sunday, March 1, at 2 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers (7-6 overall, 4-1 EAGL) own a 14-6 series advantage over the Wildcats (6-6 overall, 0-6 SEC). The teams met twice in 2007, with Kentucky earning the first victory (193.775-192.875) and WVU the second (194.325-194.150).
Three Mountaineers enter Sunday’s meet with national rankings. Senior Mehgan Morris ranks No. 16 on the floor (9.855 RQS), junior Chelsi Tabor is No. 20 on vault (9.860 RQS) and sophomore Amy Bieski joins Morris with a No. 20 floor ranking (9.850 RQS).
Bieski has quietly put together a very solid season, having scored her fourth 39.000-plus point total on Feb. 20 with 39.025 points at Oklahoma. The score is identical to the one the Nanticoke, Pa., native earned in WVU’s victory over Temple on Feb. 15. Bieski now ranks 11th on the Mountaineers’ career 39.0-plus all-around scores list with six and needs two more 39.000-plus scores to break into WVU’s all-time list.
Having earned three straight 195.000-plus scores, the Mountaineers look to maintain pace against the Wildcats with hopes of moving back into the top 18 on the GymInfo Poll. A top 18 ranking at the end of the season solidifies a regional seed for the Mountaineers in the NCAA Regional Championships.
WVU returns home after finishing third with 195.250 points at then-No. 11 Oklahoma on Feb. 20. The host Sooners finished first with 196.375 points, while No. 13 Missouri finished second with 196.225 points. Brown finished last with 185.950 points.
Morris earned the team’s only top three finish, tying for second on the bars with a season-best 9.850 points.
The Mountaineers finished second on bars (48.825) and third on vault (49.025), beam (48.625) and floor (48.775).
