DAY ONE RESULTS
INDIANAPOLIS – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished day one of action at the BIG EAST Championships with three NCAA “B” cut qualifying times. The times were recorded in both the men’s and women’s 800 free relay and the women’s 200 medley relay.
Through five events, the West Virginia women are in third place with 62 points, trailing Notre Dame (80) and Louisville (68). The men are currently in fourth place with 66 points behind Notre Dame (137), Pitt (113) and Louisville (83). Day one consisted of the 800 free relay and the 200 medley relay, along with the one-meter diving finals.
“It’s always exciting to start off the meet with these relays and we made three of four NCAA ‘B’ cuts,” Coach Vic Riggs says. “We had some real solid legs on our 800 free relays which is a goo dsign for the rest of the meet.”
The men started their meet off with a fourth-place (6:36.64) finish in the 800 free relay. Freshman Taylor Camp, seniors Michael Walker and Pablo Marmolejo and junior Tim Field swam the NCAA “B” cut time for the men.
In the 200 medley relay, the Mountaineer men swam to a tie for third place (1:29.14) with Seton Hall. Walker, junior George Farquhar, Marmolejo and senior Payton Brooks combined for the effort in the relay.
In the diving well, junior Brandon Robinson scored a 248.35 which placed him in 12th for the one-meter dive finals.
WVU’s women began the meet with a third-place (7:18.77) finish in the 800 free relay. The NCAA “B” cut time was achieved by juniors Morgan Callaway and Shaunna Purtell and seniors Lindsey Largo and Maritza Paredes. With Callaway’s first leg time of 1:47.37 she broke her own 200 free school record.
The women also recorded a NCAA “B” cut time and finished in fourth place (1:41.04) in the 200 medley relay. That team was made up of Callaway, senior Isabel Perez and juniors Stephanie Shupe and Kayla Andrews.
“Our medley relays had great speed with Shupe and Kayla posting the fastest 50 fly and 50 free splits in the heat,” Riggs says.
Action will resume tomorrow with the preliminary round beginning at 10 a.m., followed by the finals at 6 p.m. To follow the action live you can either follow MSNsportsNET.com’s blog at http://www.msnsportsnet.com/page.cfm?section=14201 or go to BIGEAST.org.
