MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three West Virginia University women’s soccer players were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s (NSCAA) all-Northeast region team today.
Midfielder Carolyn Blank was named a first-team selection for the second-straight year while defender Nicole Mailloux and forward Megan Mischler picked up third-team honors.
“I’m very happy for these ladies to be recognized for their hard work,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “It is a great honor that coaches in our region acknowledged their abilities and hard work. Each of them played integral roles in the success of our team this season.”
Blank, a Toms River, N.J., native started every match of her career, totaling 92 starts for the Old Gold and Blue – the most in program history. The Hermann Trophy candidate and two-time team captain was named a 2009 all-BIG EAST first-team selection. The NSCAA all-region selection is the third of her career after being named a first team choice in 2008 and a second-team selection in 2007.
Mischler, a Moon Township, Pa., native led the Mountaineer offense with five goals, including three game-winners, and two assists on the season. The NSCAA all-region nod is the first of her career for the two-time all-BIG EAST performer.
Mailloux, a Mississauga, Ontario, native anchored the WVU defense in tying the school record for shutouts with 13. A team captain, Mailloux was the lone returning starter on a back line that limited 10 different opponents to two shots on-goal or less this season. The NSCAA all-region selection is the first of her career.
Blank’s honor marks the 13th NSCAA first team all-region selection under coach Izzo-Brown.
West Virginia closed out the 2009 season with a 10-7-6 record, its 10th-consecutive 10-plus win season. The Mountaineers advanced to the NCAA second round for the seventh time in 10 years. WVU faced eight Top 25 opponents in 2009, a season in which Izzo-Brown picked up her 200th career win.
