West Virginia finished 16th in the final BCS standings released early Sunday evening. It was the sixth time since 2002 that the Mountaineers have been ranked in the final BCS standings. West Virginia’s highest finish in the BCS rankings was ninth in 2007.
Big East champion Cincinnati finished third in the final BCS ratings, meaning the Bearcats would have faced Alabama in the national championship game had Nebraska been able to hang on and upset Texas in the Big 12 championship game Saturday night.
Here is West Virginia’s finishes in the BCS standings since 2002:
The Bill Stewart quote of the year for me came right after West Virginia’s 24-21 victory over Rutgers: “I am going to slow this down for you. Listen to me. We are 9-3. Do you understand how many teams in America would like to be 9-3?”
It turns out a lot of teams.
West Virginia has won at least nine football games in a season five consecutive years. Here is the very short list of the others that have done it since 2005:
- Virginia Tech
- Texas
- Ohio State
- Penn State
- Florida
- Boise State
