MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s swimming team finished weekend action in the Ohio State Invitational with third-place finishes on both the men’s and women’s sides.
The men finished with 447 points, behind first place Ohio State (1,424 points) and second place Minnesota (834 points). The men also placed in front of BIG EAST rivals Notre Dame and Pitt, as well as, Penn State. The women finished with 529.5 points. In front of them was Minnesota (1,174 points) in first and Ohio State (845 points) in second. They also placed in front of Penn State, Miami and Pitt.
The day started with the 1,650 free where Tim O’Malley and Ian Stavros placed 14th and 15th, respectively, earning the Mountaineers points.
Jared Goldthorpe then continued his success with a time of 1:44.03 in the 200 back, an NCAA “B” cut time and new school record. Tim Field also placed eighth in the event at 1:50.14.
Brad Eichenseer continued success in the sprint free events with a 10th-place finish in the 100 free at 45.63.
In the 200 breast, George Farquhar finished in sixth place, while Taylor Camp placed fifth in the 200 fly with Martin Vanis finishing seventh.
The final event for the men saw Goldthorpe, Eichenseer, Camp and Hugh Simmonds placed third in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:01.29.
For the women, Kata Fodor placed sixth in the 1,650 free with a time of 16:56.78, while Sloan Storie placed 10th.
In the 200 back, Morgan Callaway swam to fourth place with a time of 2:00.48, with Sara Conner placing 12th in the event.
Kayla Andrews then grabbed her second first-place finish of the weekend in the 100 free with a time of 49.27. Shaunna Purtell finished fourth in 50.98 and Stephanie Shupe came in 15th place.
Robyn Matthews and Jaryn Studer placed ninth and 13th, respectively, in the 200 breast, while Mandie Nugent finished third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:00.53, another “B” cut time.
In the final event of the weekend, Purtell, Callaway, Rachael Burnett and Andrews finished first in the 400 free relay with a “B” cut time of 3:20.63.
The Mountaineers will be back in action when they travel to Cocoa Beach, Fla., to take part in a winter training trip from Dec. 30-Jan. 8.
