Swimming: WVU Continues Strong Performance

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia swimming team finished the second day of competition at the Ohio State Invitational Saturday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio. The men are in third place with a score of 309 points, while the women also sit at third with 350.5 points.
Jared Goldthorpe, George Farquhar, Taylor Camp and Brad Eichenseer started day two of finals with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:29.34 and a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
Tim O'Malley scored points in the 400 IM with his 15th-place finish in 4:03.86, while Eichenseer, Martin Vanis and Brandon Carr finished ninth, 10th and 14th, respectively, in the 100 fly. Eichenseer touched the wall in a time of 49.78, narrowly defeating Vanis who finished in 49.82, with Carr coming in at 50.36.
Goldthorpe recorded a "B" cut time in the 200 free, taking second in 1:37.38. Camp and Hugh Simmonds also swam in the 200 free with Camp placing 10th and Simmonds 11th. Camp finished in 1:40.26, with Simmonds coming in at 1:40.41.
In the 100 breast, Farquhar scored a fifth-place finish and "B" cut time with his time of 55.42. Jack Greenhalgh and Graham Kauffman also each placed for the Mountaineers with Greenhalgh coming ninth at 56.65 and Kauffman 16th in 58.30.
Goldthorpe continued to impress in the 100 back with another "B" cut time in 48.58, good enough for second place.
The women started their day off with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Morgan Callaway, Robyn Matthews, Stephanie Shupe and Kayla Andrews finished the event in a time of 1:43.06.
Rachael Burnett then crushed the previous school record with her 4:17.72 time in the 400 IM, a second-place finish and NCAA "B" cut. Matthews also swam the event finishing 10th in 4:22.37.
Teammates Andrews and Shupe finished the 100 fly tied for seventh as they each finished the event in 55.61. Mandie Nugent also swam finishing 10th in 56.18, while Maggie Moreland placed 16th in 58.07.
Shaunna Purtell provided West Virginia with points in the 200 free, finishing in 1:50.7 for seventh place. Burnett also swam finishing 11th in 1:50.72.
Callaway provided the women with the second individual "B" cut time of the day with her third-place finish in the 100 back in 55.47.
The women completed the day with a "B" cut in the 800 free relay. A team made up of Matthews, Callaway, Purtell and Burnett finished in 7:21.71.
The swimmers begin the final on Sunday morning with the prelims beginning at 9 a.m. and the finals starting at 3 p.m.
