MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– West Virginia University Football Coach Bill Stewart has announced the signing of first team All-America Bruce Irvin, a 6-3, 235-pound defensive end from Mt. San Antonio Community College in Walnut, Calif., to a national letter of intent.
“We are excited about the addition of Bruce Irvin to our program,” Stewart said. “He has outstanding speed and plays with relentless effort. He is a good addition to our program. With his January enrollment, it gives him a chance to get accustomed to the academic responsibilities, as well as a chance to go through spring workouts and learn our system before next season.”
Irvin, who will join the Mountaineer program for the second semester, is the No. 6 ranked junior college prospect in the nation. He helped lead Mt. San Antonio to a 13-1 record, and both the state and national championships. During its run, Mt. San Antonio defeated eight nationally ranked programs during the 2009 season.
This past season, Irwin was the second-leading tackler on his team with 72 total tackles, including 45 solo stops, 16 sacks, 21 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles, five pass breakups and one fumble recovery he returned 96 yards for a touchdown.
Other schools that offered Irvin include Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee and USC.
