MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University graduate assistant and former standout Mountaineer swimmer Pablo Marmolejo set two Mexican national swimming records at the 2009 Mexican Short Course Nationals in Veracruz, Mexico, Dec. 18-20.
“Pablo brings his experience and talent to our program on a daily basis and it's always good to have that involvement,” coach Vic Riggs says. “It's great to have him training and helping with the team.”
Marmolejo, a Mexico City native placed first in the 100 fly in 51.89 to tie a national record set by two-time Olympian Josh Ilika in 2002. Marmolejo also holds the Mexican long course 100 fly record with a time of 52.48 set at the 2009 World Championships in Rome.
The second national record came in the 200 IM where Marmolejo placed first in a time of 1:58.84, beating the previous time of 1:59.99 by more than a second. The old standard was set by three-time Olympian Juan Veloz in 2004 at the NCAA Championships.
Marmolejo also swam the 200 fly and recorded a personal best of 1:55.31 for second place.
During his tenure swimming at WVU from 2004-09, Marmolejo was a two-time honorable mention All-American and a three-time BIG EAST Champion in the 200 fly. He also holds the 200 fly school record.
