MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia University’s women’s basketball team plays host to UMBC, Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 7 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.
No. 23 WVU (10-1) and the Retrievers (4-5) will be meeting for the second time in a series that was last played in the 2001, a 69-45 victory in coach Mike Carey’s first year as West Virginia University’s coach.
West Virginia has won eight straight contests after its 72-52 victory over Fresno State on Sunday. The win streak is the longest for the Mountaineers since the squad strung together nine in a row in the 2007-08 campaign. WVU has also won nine straight contests in the WVU Coliseum and owns a 50-3 all-time record in the facility against non-conference foes under Carey.
WVU is led by junior Liz Repella’s 15.3 points per game and the Steubenville, Ohio, native has posted consecutive 20-point scoring efforts after tallying 21 against Fresno State and 20 against Longwood last weekend.
Freshman center Asya Bussie is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per contest while junior point guard Sarah Miles averages 10 points and 6.8 assists per contest, tops in the BIG EAST. Junior forward Korinne Campbell averages a team-best 8.1 rebounds per outing.
UMBC has lost three straight entering the contest, including an 81-74 loss Loyola (Md.) on Sunday. Four Retrievers are averaging double figures in scoring, led by Michelle Kurowski’s 17.7 points per contest.
The contest will be broadcast on MSN women’s basketball affiliated stations with play-by-play announcer Travis Jones and color analyst Jay Jacobs on the call. Live stats and a live video web stream can be accessed via MSNsportsNET.com.
