MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Throughout the WVU gymnastics team’s 2010 fall preseason, several Mountaineers will take the time out of their busy schedules to share stories of practice and preparation with the fans.
The fourth diary entry comes from senior Ashley Wilson, a two-time team captain and native of St. Albans, W.Va. A bars specialist as a junior, Wilson has been working on a new vault and hopes to break onto the lineup this year.
The fall semester is coming to an end and final exams are this week. Competition will be here before we know it and the excitement continues to build! Everyone is working hard, both in the gym and in the classroom. The team is can’t wait for the opportunity to step out on the floor for the first time this year.
This past Friday the coaches surprised us in practice with an intrasquad to prepare us for competition. We shook off the nerves and handled the pressure well. The team started the intrasquad on floor with solid performances from Faye Meaden, Tina Maloney, Kiersten Spoerke and Alaska Richardson. Junior Jessica Young opened the vault line-up and everyone followed her lead and hit their vaults. We then moved on to the uneven bars, and Emily Kerwin, Nicole Roach, and Amy Bieski hit great routines. We finished out the day on the balance beam with beautiful performances from seniors Shelly Purkat and Chelsi Tabor.
The intrasquad was a great opportunity for the whole team to get a feel for competition and to see what we need to work on before January. The meet-like atmosphere filled the gym with excitement. Everyone pulled together and showed their team spirit and support. I can’t wait to see what great things come once we open the season in three weeks!
Let’s go Mountaineers!!
