Volleyball: Mountaineers Continue Play

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team is set to continue play with a home match against Villanova on Friday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m., followed by its final road match at Youngstown State on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m.
The Mountaineers are 14-12, 4-7 on the season after defeating Connecticut (3-1) and falling to St. John’s (1-3) in their last week of play.
Senior Kristina Gallahan was named to the BIG EAST honor roll for her efforts over the weekend. The Mooresville, N.C., native led the team with a 4.25 kills-per-set average, third-highest in the conference, on 34 total kills in two matches. In the win over the Huskies, Gallahan posted a season-high 18 kills, aiding the Mountaineers to their first win over UConn since 2003. Junior Libero Bonnie West also had a good weekend, leading all BIG EAST players with 43 digs and a 5.38 digs-per-set average.
The Wildcats are 16-9, 5-5, after dropping a 3-1 match to Georgetown last weekend. Despite the loss, sophomore Kim Maroon posted 18 digs on the day, giving her 589 on the season to break Villanova’s single season digs record. Maggie Mergen also had a good match with 24 kills and a .478 hitting percentage.
WVU is 6-12 against Villanova after falling to the Wildcats 0-3 last season.
The Penguins are 7-18, 3-6, after falling to Akron on Tuesday in a 3-0 match. Youngstown had three players with nine kills, including Ruth Boscaljon who leads the team with 307 on the season. Laurie Shives also had a good match with 18 digs.
The Mountaineers own a 14-4 advantage in the series record against the Penguins, despite falling 1-3 last season in Morgantown.
