MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team has earned an NSCAA Team Academic Award for its work in the classroom by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
WVU is one of 326 women’s soccer teams in all divisions to post a team grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher for the 2008-09 academic year. The Mountaineers posted a team GPA of 3.41 last year and have won an NSCAA Team Academic Award in eight-straight years.
“I’m very proud of the effort our ladies give in the classroom,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Being successful on and off the field has always been a staple of this program and continuing this streak of honors is very encouraging. Our academic support staff continues to aid our student-athletes in being successful.”
West Virginia closed out the 2009 season with a 10-7-6 record, its 10th-consecutive 10-plus win season. The Mountaineers advanced to the NCAA second round for the seventh time in 10 years. Five players earned all-BIG EAST recognition, led by senior Carolyn Blank who was named to the all-BIG EAST first team for the second-straight season. Senior Nicole Mailloux and junior Megan Mischler earned third team honors, and freshmen Bri Rodriguez and Caroline Szwed were named to the all-Rookie team.
Coach Marlon LeBlanc and the WVU men’s team also won a Team Academic Award, making West Virginia one of 97 schools in all divisions to have men’s and women’s teams honored.
