MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s soccer player Eric Schoenle was named to the TopDrawerSoccer all-Rookie first team, the Web site announced today.
A freshman, Schoenle started all 18 contests on the back line and was the only Mountaineer position player to play every minute (1,767) in 2009. He finished the season with 12 shots, five of which were on-goal.
The Yardley, Pa., native was a force on the back line, as he was part of a defensive unit that allowed only 12 goals. The defense also held its opponents to a lowly .068 shot percentage and less than 10 shots per contest.
Schoenle was one of only two BIG EAST players on the all-Rookie first team, and one of just four league players on the all-rookie first and second teams.
On Nov. 12, he was honored by the league, earning one of 11 spots on the BIG EAST all-Rookie team.
WVU finished the 2009 campaign with a 7-5-6 overall mark, going 6-3-2 in league action for a third-place finish in the BIG EAST Blue Division.
