MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team plays host to No. 5-ranked and Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) foe Army on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the WVU Rifle Range. The match is set to begin at 8 a.m. and will play into the afternoon.
The Mountaineers (4-0, 1-0 GARC) return to the range after a month-long break from competition. The squad opened the 2009-10 season with four consecutive road wins.
“The team is ready and excited to shoot a match at home,” fourth-year coach Jon Hammond says. “We’re hoping for a good performance against Army. This weekend will help us see where we stack up against the best in the nation, but we are ultimately most concerned about our performance. We need to shoot like we do in practice and get some good individual showings.”
The Mountaineers trumped the Black Knights in a shoulder-to-shoulder match last season, 4659-4616, in West Point, N.Y. The win snapped WVU’s three-match losing streak to Army. The Mountaineers hold a 29-10 series advantage over the Black Knights.
WVU is off to a fast start in defense of its nation-best 14th national title, having earned four road victories in the month of October. The squad opened the season with wins over Air Force (4655-4587), at GARC opponent Nebraska (4660-4634), at Ohio State (4666-4538) and at Akron (4665-4560).
Junior All-American Andy Lamson paces the squad averages in both smallbore (580.25) and combined score (1169.75). Fellow All-American, senior Bryant Wallizer, holds the top air rifle average (590).
The Mountaineers stay at home next weekend and play host to No. 2-ranked Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 8 a.m. at the WVU Rifle Range.
