Swimming: WVU Travels to Villanova, Rutgers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s swimming and diving teams will make its final road trip of the fall season on Friday, Nov. 13, as the Mountaineers travel to Villanova, Pa., to take on Villanova. The women will also travel to Piscataway, N.J., on Saturday, Nov. 14, to take on Rutgers.
The Villanova meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at The Villanova Swim Complex, while the Rutgers meet will start at 1 p.m. at the RU Aquatic Center in the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center.
The Mountaineer men are 1-2 on the year, 1-1 against BIG EAST competition; West Virginia's women are 3-2 overall, 1-1 in the league. The Wildcat men are 1-3 overall, 0-1 in BIG EAST competition; the women come into the meet 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST. Rutgers is 2-0 overall and 2-0 in BIG EAST competition.
West Virginia's last meeting with Villanova was in 1989 when the men defeated the Wildcats, 57-56 and the West Virginia women fell, 65-45. The last time the Mountaineer women faced Rutgers was in 2003, when the Scarlet Knights defeated West Virginia, 142-91 in Piscataway.
For the West Virginia men, underclassmen continue to lead the way thus far in 2009-10. Freshmen Jared Goldthorpe and Hugh Simmonds have garnered multiple wins for the Mountaineers, while sophomore Taylor Camp has had key swims as well. Divers Brandon Robinson (senior) and Matt O’Neill (sophomore) have been outstanding in both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards this season.
On the women's side, seniors Kayla Andrews and Morgan Callaway, as well as freshman Rachael Burnett, Kata Fodor, Mandie Nugent, Sloan Storie and Robyn Matthews have scored big points in all of the meets this season.
