Volleyball: WVU Set for BIG EAST Road Trip

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team is set for its second-straight BIG EAST road trip, as it prepares for a 7 p.m. match against USF on Friday, Oct. 9, and a 2 p.m. match against Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 11.
The Mountaineers own a 11-8, 1-3 BIG EAST record, after dropping two matches to Louisville (3-0) and Cincinnati (3-0) last weekend. Despite the loss to the Bearcats, the Mountaineers put up an excellent defensive effort with 10.5 total team blocks, including six block assists from junior Abby Norman.
WVU is led by junior Lauren Evans who has 178 kills for a .305 hitting percentage this season. Evans is also currently ranked second in the conference for service aces with 29 on the season. Junior libero Bonnie West leads the team in digs as she is ranked fifth in the conference with 286, averaging 4.09 per game.
The Bulls are 9-4, 2-1 so far this season, despite a 2-3 loss to Connecticut last weekend. Marcela Gurgel led USF with 18 kills, while Libero Janice Rivera posted 34 digs. The Bulls currently lead the conference in blocks as they average 4.38 blocks per game. In their last match, the Bulls posted 19 blocks. Since the two teams first meeting in 2005, USF owns a 3-1 advantage in the series record after it defeated WVU 3-2 last season in Morgantown.
Georgetown is 11-9, 1-3 after also falling to Uconn in a 3-0 match last weekend. Vanessa Dorismond led the Hoyas with 11 kills, while Tory Rezin had 18 digs. The Mountaineers are 10-16 all-time with the Hoyas. In their last meeting, Georgetown defeated the Mountaineers 3-1 in Morgantown.
