Cincinnati, Ohio – The West Virginia University volleyball was defeated by BIG EAST competitor Cincinnati this afternoon at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Bearcats improved to 12-7, 3-0 after the 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-19) victory over the Mountaineers (11-8, 1-3).
Set one saw the Mountaineers and Bearcats tie six times before the first timeout, as WVU fought to keep up. Down 6-8, junior middle blocker Abby Norman and sophomore outside hitter Kylie Armbruster posted back-to-back kills to even the score. Cincinnati then returned with a service ace from Rebecca Refenes to start a 4-0 run for the lead. The Bearcats remained in the lead as they posted 11 kills and 21 digs to win set one.
The Mountaineers rebounded to lead most of set two after a service ace from junior middle blocker Lauren Evans gave the Mountaineers a 4-3 advantage. The Bearcats then regained a 22-21 lead after a pair of kills from Jordanne Scott. However, the Mountaineers refused to give up as they once again tied the match with a kill from Evans. Despite their best efforts, the Mountaineers fell after a kill from Missy Harpenau pushed the Bearcats to win the set.
WVU jumped to an early 3-0 lead in set three, after a service ace from junior libero Bonnie West and a WVU block. The Mountaineers maintained the lead for most of the set until a kill by Megan Turner gave the Bearcats the momentum. Several runs by the Bearcats proved to be too much for the Mountaineers as the match ended on a kill from Cincinnati’s Scott.
The Mountaineers put up a good defensive effort in today’s match with 10.5 total team blocks, including 6 block assists from junior middle blocker Abby Norman.
Armbruster also had a good match with six kills and eight blocks, while sophomore setter Kari Post recorded 22 assists and seven digs.
The Mountaineers are set for another BIG EAST road trip beginning on Friday, Oct. 9, with a 7 p.m. match at USF, and a 2 p.m. match at Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 11.
