MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team concluded this weekend’s Queen City Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio, with a title in doubles competition and several wins in each singles flight.
“We were very pleased with winning a title this weekend without having our top two players with us,” coach Marc Walters says. “Despite some playing up in flights, everyone stepped up and played hard against teams that were competing with full force.”
Leading the team this weekend was flight ‘B’ doubles winners freshman Emily Mathis and sophomore Veronica Cardenas. After three-straight wins against Cincinnati, Toledo, and Ball State, the pair finished the finals with an 8-4 win over Ball State’s Dena Boulieris and Lauren Picksel to win the title.
Freshman Liv Pettersson and sophomore Catie Wickline also landed an 8-4 victory in flight ‘B’ doubles against Dayton’s Chelsea Glanker and Molly Matthews. The duo, however, was defeated by Toledo’s Jessica Azoulay and Missy Reynolds in the quarterfinals in a close 8-6 match.
Mathis led the Mountaineers in singles competition, making it to the finals round of the flight ‘A’ consolation bracket where she was defeated in a tough 6-2, 7-6 match against Michigan State’s Lindsey Lonergan.
“Emily’s performance as a freshman was very impressive,” Walters adds. “She was competitive and never gave up, which showed in her results.”
Also highlighting the weekend in singles play was Catie Wickline, who made it to the flight ‘D’ consolation finals. She was defeated 7-6, 6-3 to Cincinnati’s Anna Nelke.
The Mountaineers will continue action on Friday, Oct. 9-10, in Toledo, Ohio at the Toledo Rocket Invitational.
