MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior women’s soccer player Kerri Butler has been named WVU’s athlete of the week for her outstanding play over the weekend. The Mountaineers tied at UConn, 0-0, and won at Providence, 1-0.
Butler made 15 saves and faced 12 corner kicks over the two matches. She logged all 200 minutes over the weekend, making a career-high nine saves and facing six corner kicks against UConn. It was only the third time UConn has been shutout this season.
Yesterday, Butler recorded six saves and faced six corner kicks against Providence.
The Fredericksburg, Va., native recorded her ninth and 10th shutouts of the season – the sixth and seventh of BIG EAST play. She improved her goals-against average to 0.60 on the season. Butler has guided a WVU defense that has allowed only two goals in the last 670 minutes of play (seven games).

The No. 4 West Virginia University cross country team is set to return to action on Saturday, Oct. 31, with the BIG EAST Championship in Kenosha, Wis. ... the race is set for 12:50 p.m. ET.

WVU played to a thrilling 0-0 double-overtime draw at Connecticut on Oct. 23 … West Virginia had game-winning chances from freshman midfielder Caroline Szwed and all-BIG EAST forward Megan Mischler in the first overtime session with both sending balls high over the goal … Mountaineer goalkeeper Kerri Butler was brilliant in goal, playing her best match of the season in making a career-high nine saves in the team’s 10th shutout of the season … the junior came up with huge saves in every period, most notably at the end of regulation and in the waning seconds of the match … after a slow first half, WVU turned the heat up offensively in the second, taking 10 shots in the first 20 minutes and finishing with a 22-21 edge in shots … Mischler scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to lead West Virginia to a 1-0 win at Providence on Oct. 25 … the win helped coach Nikki Izzo-Brown earn her 200th career victory … Mischler’s goal came at the 19:59 mark on a volley over Providence goalkeeper Jill Schott from eight yards out ... The WVU tennis season was completed Oct. 22-25, in Blacksburg, Va., at the ITA Regionals, where senior Stephanie LaFortune and redshirt junior Monique Burton represented the Mountaineers ... the duo finished the tournament with a 1-1 record in the doubles competition after winning 8-6 against Howard’s Brittney Morgan and Alyssa Works, then falling short to Virginia’s No. 4 seed, Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra, in an 8-1 match … LaFortune earned WVU’s first Regionals win in over five years against Pitt’s Shannon Benic in a 6-3, 6-1, match in the qualifying singles competition.
