MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe Notre Dame this afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
Notre Dame remains undefeated in the conference with an overall 13-4, 7-0 record after defeating the Mountaineers (13-10, 3-5) in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-23) match.
Despite the loss, the Mountaineers had an excellent day with 34 kills, 52 digs and 7.5 team blocks, five of which came in the third set.
WVU controlled the first part of set one after a service ace from junior middle blocker Lauren Evans, followed by a kill from sophomore outside hitter Kylie Armbruster put the Mountaineers up 7-5. The Fighting Irish then returned with kills from Kristen Dealy and Serinity Phillips to start several runs as they regained the lead. A block from Tara Enzweiler and Dealy ended the set.
Set two proved to be just as exciting for the Mountaineers, as they saw 14 ties and nine lead changes. Down 14-16, a kill from junior outside hitter Andrea Miller followed by a Notre Dame attack error tied the set at 16. However, Notre Dame rebounded with a kill from Jamel Nicholas as the Fighting Irish went on to win the set.
The Mountaineers jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the third set after back-to-back kills from senior Abby Raines and one from Evans. WVU continued to power through the set as they found themselves up 17-14 after a block from Evans and Raines. Notre Dame, however, refused to give up as they once again fought for the lead. Tied at 21, a kill from Notre Dame’s Dealy gave the Irish the advantage. She then went on to post another kill to end the match.
Evans led the Mountaineers with nine kills and five blocks on the day, while Raines added nine kills and six digs.
Sophomore setter Kari Post also had a good match with 31 assists and nine digs, while junior libero Bonnie West posted 18 digs.
WVU returns to the road on Friday, Oct. 23, as they travel to Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, Pa., for a conference match against Pitt. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
