MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team is set to host BIG EAST play this weekend with a 6 p.m. match against DePaul on Friday, Oct. 16, and a 1 p.m. match against Notre Dame on Sunday, Oct. 18.
The Mountaineers (12-9, 2-4) went 1-1 last weekend with a victory over Georgetown (3-2) and a loss to USF (0-3).
Senior outside hitter Kristina Gallahan led the Mountaineers over the weekend with 20 kills, 10 digs and four service aces. Junior libero Bonnie West also had a good showing with 29 digs, including 20 in the win over the Hoyas.
DePaul is 6-11, 0-3 this season, after dropping its BIG EAST home opener last weekend to Villanova (0-3). Despite the loss, freshman outside hitter Chandler Carney posted a career-best performance with 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. The Mountaineers currently own a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series record with the Blue Demons, even though DePaul won the last meeting 3-0 in Chicago.
Notre Dame remains the only undefeated team in the conference after defeating Louisville (3-1) last weekend. Senior outside hitter Serinity Phillips led the Irish with 18 kills and .441 hitting percentage in the match, while Christina Kaelin added 14. Last season the Irish defeated the Mountaineers 3-0 in South Bend, Ind., to put the all-time series record at 2-14, in favor of Notre Dame.
Sunday’s match against the Irish will be the Mountaineers “Pink” match in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
