The Greenbrier Classic, the PGA TOUR, FedExCup event that will be played at The Greenbrier next year, now has a tournament director. Former West Virginia University men's basketball player Tim McNeely, who has extensive PGA TOUR experience, will be the resort’s key executive in managing and developing the event.
“Tim is the perfect person for this position,” said Jim Justice, owner and chairman of The Greenbrier. “His success with the Nationwide Tour, combined with his sports marketing and legal background made this an easy business decision. But his passion and love for this state are what makes Tim the only person who should lead The Greenbrier Classic.”
McNeely was responsible for bringing the PGA TOUR’s Nationwide Tour to West Virginia for the Pete Dye Classic in 2004. In its inaugural year, the event was voted as the Nationwide Tour Tournament of the Year. Over the next several years, the Classic grew. In 2008, it was renamed the Players Cup and set telecast ratings for a Nationwide Tour event.
His firm, McNeely Sports, contracted with the PGA TOUR and the Golf Channel and was the exclusive agent responsible for all operations, marketing, sponsorship development, and implementation of the first ever $1 million event on the Nationwide Tour. McNeely’s peers voted him chairman of the PGA TOUR/Nationwide Tour Tournament Advisory Committee.
Prior to his involvement with the PGA TOUR, McNeely served as the deputy director and general counsel for the West Virginia Development Office. During this time he chaired the committee overseeing the State’s Tax Increment Financing initiative as well as the West Virginia Development Authority on behalf of Governor Bob Wise.
McNeely, a four-year letterman on the WVU basketball team, received his bachelor’s degree in sports marketing. He later earned his doctor of jurisprudence from the West Virginia University College of Law.
