NOTRE DAME, Ind. - In the final day of action in the Shamrock Invitational, the West Virginia Mountaineers swimming and diving teams fell to Denver, Michigan State and Notre Dame.
“We had some very good swims today and we had some people step up and race very well,” says Coach Vic Riggs. “I am real pleased to have Madison (Morrison), Gabe (Wilson) and Philip (Berry) make their BIG EAST cuts. We definitely showed signs of what we can do at BIG EAST Championships.”
On a day highlighted by two pool records broken, the men were defeated by Denver (218-150), Michigan State (200-168) and Notre Dame (243-127). The women were also defeated by Denver (190-157), Michigan State (187-168) and Notre Dame (265.5-97.5).
A team made up of seniors Michael Walker, Pablo Marmolejo, Payton Brooks and junior George Farquhar began the day with a first-place (1:32.64) finish in the 200 medley relay.
Walker followed that up by coming in second place (3:56.43) in the 400 IM. Walker and Denver’s Clayton Myers each broke the pool record that was set by Marmolejo in 2004. In the 200 back Walker finished in fifth place (1:52.16) and also swam to fourth place (2:05.82) in the 200 breast. Farquhar followed narrowly behind Walker in the 200 breast placing fifth (2:06.59). Farquhar also finished second (57.28) in the 100 breast.
The 200 medley relay team made up of juniors Morgan Callaway, Kayla Andrews, Stephanie Shupe and senior Isabel Perez started the day with a third-place (1:46.56) finish.
In the 400 IM, senior Lindsey Largo was the highest Mountaineer finisher coming in fifth place (4:31.96). Largo also competed in the 1650 free where she came in third (16:55.73).
The 100 fly saw two Mountaineers, Andrews and Shupe finish in third (56.99) and fifth place (57.92), respectively.
Andrews, who recorded a NCAA “B” cut time earlier in the year finished in first place (50.02) in the 100 free. Andrews also swam in the 100 back where she placed fifth (58.75).
Callaway had a successful day finishing in third (1:53.06) in the 200 free, seventh (59.49) in the 100 back and fifth (2:07.39) in the 200 back.
In the 100 breast, Perez finished in sixth place (1:07.78) and touched the wall in second place (2:23.08) in the 200 breast.
“We have to work on finishing our races better and that will come with rest,” Riggs says. “We will use the next two meets to fine tune our performances and prepare for BIG EAST Championships.”
The Mountaineers will now prepare to host Maryland on Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. All fans are encouraged to come to the WVU Natatorium and enjoy the Senior Day festivities.
