The Herd took the point in doubles as Kellie Schmitt and Karolina Soor defeated Ashley Pilsbury and Gabreiela Blaskovicova 8-1 in the No. 1 spot, while Deanna Bailey and Jessica Keener defeated Milica Pantovic and Stephanie LaFortune 8-4 at No. 2.
“We are not where we need to be competitively right now,” Coach Marc Walters says. “If we took anything from this weekend it is how to step up and be competitive.”
The Mountaineers’ lone win in doubles came from newcomers Olga Elkin and Veronica Cardenas, who defeated Marshall’s Kristina Koprcina and Catherine Kellner 8-4 at the No. 3 spot.
The nationally-ranked Herd took all six singles matches on the day.
“Both of the girls that LaFortune played this weekend were ranked in the top 100,” Waters says. “For her this was a very tough weekend and she handled it with a lot of class.”
The Mountaineers return to the court on Jan. 31, as they host James Madison and Richmond at the Greenbrier Hotel and Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
