MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On the heels of a two-week season-opening road trip, the No. 21 West Virginia University gymnastics team (1-3) opens its home and conference seasons against Pitt (2-2 overall, 0-1 EAGL) on Friday, Jan. 23, at 8 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.
WVU owns a 45-12-2 record over the Panthers, including an 11-0 mark since the 2005 season.
The Mountaineers open their 14th EAGL season after finishing with an unblemished conference record (16-0) in 2008, including a 9-0 regular-season mark. WVU capped off the conference season with its sixth EAGL Championship, winning the title in front of 1,324 fans at the WVU Coliseum.
The team returns to action after a 1-2 showing at Michigan State on Jan. 17. The Mountaineers finished in third place with 193.700 points and earned their first win of the season, as Illinois State finished fourth with 190.700 points. Iowa won the meet with 194.350 points, while the host Spartans finished second with 194.200 points.
Sophomore Amy Bieski, junior Chelsi Tabor and senior Mehgan Morris combined for three individual first-place finishes last week. Bieski won the floor exercise (9.850), while Tabor finished first (9.825) in the vault for the second-straight week. Morris completed the trifecta with a win on the uneven bars (9.825).
Additionally, Bieski finished second overall on bars (9.800) and Morris took third in the all-around (38.800). Tabor paced WVU on the balance beam with a squad best 9.700 points.
As a team, WVU improved its season opening bars score by .300 points, finishing first with 48.775 points.
The Panthers return to the floor after a second-place finish (193.025) at the Pitt Invitational on Jan. 17.
