Tennis: Mountaineers Conclude Brevard Invite

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team completed its trip to the Brevard Invite, in Brevard, N.C., with a successful finish in both singles and doubles play.
“Physically our recovery was good coming off the heel of our blue/gold challenge last weekend,” Head Coach Marc Walters says. “We came out and had a good weekend.”
In the singles Flight ‘A’ competition, sophomore Ashley Pilsbury fell in the semi- final round of play to Kristi Kegerreis of Georgia Southern in a 2-6, 3-6 match, after defeating Laura Kriegtt from Gardner-Webb on day one 6-1,6-2.
Also competing in Flight ‘A’ was freshman Veronica Cardenas who defeated Lindsey Hostetter from Brevard 6-3, 6-0, in the opening day of competition. Cardenas then fell to Georgia Southern’s Molly Maddox in a tough 1-6, 6-7(4) match, in the semi-finals.
Junior Olga Elkin led the Mountaineers in Flight ‘B’ of singles competition as she defeated Ali Beavers from Georgia Southern in the finals, 6-4, 7-6. In the semi-final round Elkin captured wins against Catherine Thomas from Pfeiffer 6-0, 6-4, and Rita Gouveia from Gardner-Webb 6-4, 5-7(10-7).
Junior Stephanie LaFortune lost in the semi-final round of play in Flight ‘B’ to Beavers 4-6, 2-6. Earlier LaFortune defeated Maria Dreaden from North Georgia 6-2, 6-4 and Jennifer Nyman from Brevard 6-0, 6-4.
In Flight ‘C’ WVU junior Monique Burton posted wins against Emily Sorah of Carson Newman 6-1, 6-0, and Georgia Southern’s Knight 4-6, 6-1 (10-5). Burton was then defeated in the finals 6-3, 6-4 by Georgia Southern’s Jessica Fuller.
Gabriela Blaskovicova took down Brevard’s Kim Dixon in round one of Flight ‘C’ 6-0, 6-1, before falling to Fuller in the semi-finals 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, the Flight ‘A’ team of Burton and Pilsbury dropped their first round match to Hostetter and Lindsay Shaeffer of Brevard, 7-9. The duo then fought back to defeat Pfeiffer’s Patricia Dominguez and Emily Perkins 8-6, which put them in the consolation finals. There, they overcame Laura Kriett and Gouveia from Gardner-Webb, 8-3.
The Flight ‘B’ championship was captured by LaFortune and Elkin as they downed Gardner-Webb’s team of Jenny Gomez and Black 8-6.
The Mountaineer team of Cardenas and Catie Wickline also took the championship in Flight ‘C’ as they defeated teammates Blaskovicova and Milica Pantovic 8-2.
The WVU will return to action on Friday, Sept. 12, as it hosts the annual Martha Thorn Invitational at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex.
