MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University Volleyball team (1-3) defeated Winthrop (2-2) today at the Hilton Garden Inn Classic, in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Mountaineers came back to defeat the Eagles 3-2 (21-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-17, 17-15).
“I think we really earned this win,” says Head Coach Veronica Hammersmith. “We were down 2-0 at first, but we bounced back in the third game and blocked better and played better defense which put a lot of pressure on them.”
Redshirt sophomore setter Nicole Jones posted the first double-double of her career with 41 assists and 13 digs. She also posted six kills, one of which ended set five for the Mountaineers’ victory.
Also leading the Mountaineers was freshman outside hitter Kylie Armbruster who recorded her first double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs. Junior outside hitter Kristina Gallahan led the Mountaineers in kills with 12, while sophomore libero Bonnie West posted 21 digs.
The Mountaineers will close out the weekend on Saturday, Sept. 6, with a match against Morehead State at noon and Youngstown State at 4:30 p.m.
