QUEENS, N.Y. – Despite taking 14 more shots than its opponent, 11th-ranked West Virginia played to a 0-0 double overtime draw with St. John’s Thursday afternoon at Belson Stadium.
The Mountaineers appeared to take an early 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on a goal from junior Carolyn Blank. Junior Nicole Mailloux served a corner kick into the box where Blank’s one-touch appeared to hit the inside of the net before being cleared by a St. John’s defender. Play continued without a goal, forcing a scoreless first half.
“I was able to get a foot on it and it should have been a goal,” said midfielder Blank. “It’s unfortunate because it hit the netting which is clearly a goal.”
Blank finished with a season-high six shots as West Virginia out-shot the Red Storm 19-5 on the day.
St. John’s managed only two dangerous scoring chances, including one late in the second overtime. Goalkeeper Kerri Butler came up with huge save off a St. John’s corner kick. The sophomore goalkeeper made a diving save to her right on a hard shot from midfielder Courtney Curby.
The shutout was the seventh of the year for the WVU defense which has not allowed a goal in the last three matches.
The contest marked the fourth overtime game of the season for the Mountaineers (6-1-3, 1-0-1) and the fourth in its last five for St. John’s (4-1-4, 0-0-2).
The tie is only the third in 13 meetings (8-2-3) between the two schools.
Next up for the Mountaineers is a home match against Syracuse on Sunday, Sept. 28. The 1 p.m. match will be televised on WVPBS with Dave Jecklin and Adam Zundell calling the action.
