MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia Univeristy football player quotes following Tuesday afternoon's practice.
Ellis Lankster on Marshall
Marshall’s receivers are fast and physical. I’m going to have to be on my game this week. They have big kids with good hands, but we have been working hard and will be ready for the game.
I didn’t get to play against Marshall last year. When I watch them on film, they have some great athletes but we’re going to be ready.
On improvements made
We continue to improve on the mistakes that we made the last couple of games. We are communicating better with each other. Robert Sands is getting a lot of experience and is doing well.
Does he feel pressure to win
We just ignore it, but at the same time we are going to respond to it to get our fans back and make them happy.
Brandon Hogan on Coach Stew and Lockwood
It’s been great. I’m learning a lot about football. I’m learning a lot more about defense and I’m learning a lot about the game. The coaches say they want to move me around but that’s up to them. It shows that I have the ability to play anywhere on the field. All I want to do is just go out and make plays.
On his playing time as a freshman
It felt pretty good to play as a freshman, and I got to travel so that was good. I didn’t play as much as I wanted, but you have to pay your dues.
On why he chose WVU
I picked WVU because the team has a vibe about them. I loved the offense and it was the type of offense I ran in high school and you can do a lot with the offense that we run. I like Coach Stew a lot because he recruited me. I thought he was a good man, and I really liked him. When I came to visit, I knew it was where I wanted to be.
On improvements to be made
We have to keep getting better and continue to study our opponent. We have to keep flying around to the ball and make tackles.
Jarrett Brown
On his multiple talents
When I run, I run and when I throw, I throw. I think I have the ability to do both. I can catch too. I play catch with Pat (White) everyday, so I can do it all.
You’re out in space when you catch the ball. When you’re at quarterback and you’re running, if you drop back to pass then run it, it’s easier then because it’s not expected. Screens are easier because you win space.
Last time he took a hand off
The first time I received a hand off was when I was about 10 years old when I played running back. I was pretty big for my age and I used to run the route. I wore my Emmitt Smith jersey-I had a No. 22 shirt that I always wore under my jersey, and my number was 22. Smith was my guy.
Quinton Andrews
On the improvements that he has seen
We had a lot of guys play much better than we did in the first two weeks, including myself. Hopefully we can just keep riding that wave of confidence into the next game.
On his first pick
My first pick was two years ago against Marshall, it was the first game. After I got beat for a touchdown I am hoping and praying that I can get one this year.
On Marshall quarterback Mark Cann
Watching them in film, Cann does show a lot of poise and if I’m not mistaken, he’s a coach’s son. Usually those guys are really good, especially when they are put in the position like quarterback. He looks pretty good, but he’s still a young guy who hasn’t taken too many snaps.
On winning under Coach Stew
I feel pressure to win even after winning the first game. There is always going to be pressure and me being the person that I am, I want to do my best so Coach Stew can look really good, because I know he is trying his best. The whole team feels the same thing, and we want to keep him as our coach.
