MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team, who led 1-0 heading into halftime, saw its lead slip away as Virginia scored two goals in a seven-minute time span for the victory. This was the first of two preseason matches for the Mountaineers.
The Cavaliers' first goal in the second half came at the 50:49 mark. Tony Tchany took a through ball up the middle and took a shot from inside the 18-yard box, blasting it past Ryan Chance, knotting the game at one apiece.
Just more than seven minutes later, Virginia scored the go-ahead goal. Ross LaBeaux dribbled the ball up the middle of the field and found Matt Mitchell on the right wing. Mitchell struck the ball from just inside the 18-yard box for the gamewinner.
West Virginia’s lone score of the game came off the foot of sophomore Dan Hagey. Sophomore Paul Paradise sent a through ball up the middle to Hagey, and after a save by Virginia’s Michael Giallombardo, Hagey took the rebound and put it in the back of the net.
The Mountaineers held the advantage in corner kicks, 3-1.
Seven newcomers saw the field in the first half for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers' next preseason game is scheduled for Aug. 23 at Lexington, Ky., against Kentucky. The match is at 7 p.m.
