Baseball: Three Mountaineers Honored

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University baseball players Jedd Gyorko and Tyler Kuhn have been named to the ECAC 2008 Division I Baseball All-Star first team. Gyorko was also named the ECAC Rookie of the Year and sophomore Vince Belnome earned second team honors.
Gyorko, a Morgantown, W.Va., native, closed his freshman campaign with a batting average of .409, registered 95 hits, including 17 doubles and eight home runs (two grand slams) with 63 RBIs. Gyorko was named the 2008 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, all-BIG EAST second team, and was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Team.
Most recently, Gyorko was named to the Pro-Line Athletic/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) 2008 Freshman All-American first team on June 9.
Kuhn was recently named to the Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA 2008 All-American third team. The senior was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball Draft earlier this month and t recently was named to the 2008 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-American third team.
The Louisville, Ky., native, earned all-BIG EAST first-team honors last month and finished his Mountaineer career leading the team with a .424 batting average. He was the first player in school history to record more than 100 hits in a season, registering 101 in 2008.
This is Belnome’s first post-season award. The third baseman led the team with 66 RBIs and 19 doubles. Belnome closed the season with a .377 batting average and 83 hits, and was named to the all-BIG EAST third team.
