MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior swimmer Nick Delic and volleyball senior Kailee Goold have been selected as the recipients of the 2008 Red Brown Cup, presented annually to West Virginia University’s most outstanding all-around student-athlete. The Red Brown Cup encompasses the student-athlete’s athletic, academic and civic achievement. The WVU Athletic Council voted this year to annually award the top male and female student-athletes.
A native of Avon Lake, Ohio, Goold helped the Mountaineer volleyball team to a 16-14 overall record in 2007, an improvement of 13 victories from the previous season. Goold finished her Mountaineer career with 3,337 career assists, good for fourth all-time in WVU history. She also tallied 1,225 assists in her senior campaign which ranked her third in single-season assists.
Goold will graduate with a dual major in history and political science and has plans of attending law school. She is a BIG EAST Academic All-Star and a member of WVU’s Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll. She was a three-time ESPN The Magazine academic first-team All-District II honoree.
In the community, Goold was a member of the WVU Student Athlete Advisory Committee for two years and volunteered her time at the Ronald McDonald House and with Adopt-A-Highway. A member of Pi Sigma Alpha and Golden Key International Honor Society, Goold has also been a teacher’s aid at Eastview Elementary and Bay Village High Schools.
A four-year letterwinner, Delic garnered six All-America distinctions during his Mountaineer career, the first coming after his 13th-place finish in the 100-breast stroke and as a member of the 200-freestyle relay in 2006. In 2007, he earned All-America honors as a member of the seventh place 200-free relay team, and honorable-mention honors for his contributions on the 11th place 400-free relay, the 16th place 200-medley team and on the 11th place 400-medley relay team. Delic leaves WVU with or as part of four school records, one WVU Natatorium record and three BIG EAST Conference records.
A native of Split, Croatia, who will graduate this spring with a degree in finance, Delic is a member of WVU’s Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and is a BIG EAST Academic All-Star. He also mentored many young swimmers during his career.
