Markel Named to All-Tournament Team

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia baseball outfielder Austin Markel has been named to the 2008 BIG EAST All-Tournament Team, announced after the championship game between Louisville and Cincinnati, today, at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla.
Markel had a strong showing in the tournament, registering a .417 batting average, five hits, including three doubles and one home run, and a team-high six RBIs. The Elizabethville, Pa., native also led the team with a .917 slugging percentage.
WVU fell against second-seeded Cincinnati in game one on Tuesday, May 20, 11-5, before defeating No. 3-seeded Notre Dame on Wednesday, May 21, 13-6, to eliminate the Irish. The Mountaineers fell in game three of the tournament against No. 6 USF, 12-5, in the double elimination tournament on Thursday, May 22.
Louisville won the championship crown today, defeating Cincinnati, 6-3, and received the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Freshman Jedd Gyorko was named Rookie of the Year, while Tyler Kuhn earned first team honors at the opening ceremonies held on Monday, May 19. Gyorko was also named to the BIG EAST second team along with outfielder Justin Parks. First baseman Joe Agreste and third baseman Vince Belnome were both named to the BIG EAST third team.
