The Bearcats (35-19, 18-8) pounded out 20 hits in game one including 13 hits off starter Josh Whitlock, who gave up 12 earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings pitched to take the loss. He drops to 7-6. Camero Satterwhite went 3 for 4 with a pair of home runs and six RBI in the first game and knocked in two more runs in the nightcap.
Mike Spina hit home runs in both games including his conference-leading 17th in the second game, finishing the doubleheader with four hits.
Dan Osterbrock was credited with the victory despite not pitching the mandatory five innings. Osterbrock was on a pitch count and was removed with one out remaining in the fifth. He gave up four earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts to improve to 7-2.
Michael Hill pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in the nightcap to claim his fifth victory of the season.
Jarryd Summers surrendered six earned runs on seven hits in relief of Mountaineer starter Billy Gross to take the loss. Gross allowed one unearned run in four innings of work.
Tobias Streich went 2 for 3 in the first game with a two-run homer and a double. Grant Buckner and Tyler Kuhn also had a pair of hits.
Jedd Gyroko had three of West Virginia’s four hits in the second game.
West Virginia has now lost five straight on the road in conference play, and drops to 3-10 this year in road games.
The Mountaineers (34-18, 13-13) received good news earlier today when Louisville swept a doubleheader from Rutgers, assuring the Mountaineers a spot in the 2008 Big East Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. WVU is making a return trip to postseason play after missing the Big East Tournament on the final day of the regular season last year.
West Virginia and Cincinnati will complete the series on Saturday with a 1 pm game.
