MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's basketball team finished the 2007-08 season with a No. 17 ranking in the final post-tournament ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
West Virginia finished with a 26-11 record and earned its third NCAA "Sweet 16" appearance in the last four years.
This ranking marks the fourth time that the Mountaineers have been ranked in the final post-tournament poll since a post-tournament poll was started in 1994. In 1998, the "Sweet 16" team finished with a No. 18 ranking, the 2005 "Elite Eight" team finished No. 12 and the 2006 "Sweet 16" team ended the season No. 15.
The Mountaineers were one of seven BIG EAST teams ranked in the final poll: Louisville (No. 6), Georgetown (No. 12), Pitt (No. 18), Notre Dame (No. 19), Marquette (No. 21) and Villanova (No. 24).
WVU spent one week ranked in the ESPN/USA Today poll this season. The Mountaineers were ranked No. 23 on Dec. 24. West Virginia was ranked No. 24 in the AP poll on Dec. 17 and No. 23 on Dec. 24.
The AP does not compile a post-tournament poll. West Virginia received seven votes in the final AP poll on March 18.
