Support for WVU never stronger

In yesterday’s edition of the Charleston Daily Mail, Jack Bogaczyk mentioned that support for West Virginia University athletics has never been stronger.
Bogaczyk talks about the Mountaineer Athletic Club’s annual scholarship dinner, which was held in Charleston last night, and points out that WVU is currently sixth in the 2007-2008 Athletic Directors Cup standings while spending far less than many of the other schools with comparable rankings.

Rivals.com writer Olin Buchanan reveals his Heisman Trophy Top 10 and has West Virginia’s Pat White fifth. Wrote Buchanan, “Perhaps the most electrifying player in the country, White is a threat to score from anywhere on the field. The sight of White in the open field is usually followed by the sight of the referee raising his arms.”

College Football News.com lists its 35-best undrafted free agents and lists West Virginia’s Keilen Dykes fourth on their list. “Great at West Virginia with the type of overachiever career that helped take the program to another level, he'll be tough to boot off a team,” wrote College Football News.com

Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review wrote today about the journey former WVU defensive back Ryan Mundy has taken to get back to his native Pittsburgh after stops at Michigan and West Virginia University.
Brown discusses Mundy’s love for the Steelers as a pee-wee football player and how the franchise based their 6th round selection of him on Mundy’s ability pick up defenses quickly and be a solidifying force in the secondary.
"When you talk to the people at West Virginia, they really felt that Ryan was a huge part of pulling their defense together," Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said.

In yesterday’s edition of the Charleston Daily Mail, Mike Casazza discussed the selections of West Virginia draft picks Owen Schmitt, Steve Slaton and Ryan Mundy. He analyzes each player’s expected contribution as well as the other players at their respective positions that they will be competing with for a roster spot.

In today’s Houston Chronicle Megan Manfull examines Steve Slaton’s expected role as a third-down situational back in the Houston Texans’ offensive attack.
"I think he has a chance to be a special-type player," Texans offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. "You look at guys around the league like Kevin Faulk, a guy like Reggie Bush; guys who come in and fill a specific role on third downs."

The Mountaineer baseball team received two votes in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Top 25 coaches’ poll, good for 41st place. Greg Van Zant’s club is quietly putting together an impressive season. At 32-11 overall and 11-7 in the Big East, the Mountaineers are in sole possession of fifth place in the league and just two games out of first place heading into this weekend’s three-game series at league-leading St. John’s.
