MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia scored three unanswered goals to post a 3-1 win over Maryland Friday evening at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md. The win over the Terrapins was the final spring contest for the Mountaineers.
“It was a great team effort tonight and a nice way to end our spring season,” said Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “The ladies worked hard all spring and to end on this type of performance is encouraging for the fall.”
Maryland took an early 1-0 lead in the game’s sixth minute. The Terps scored on a rebound in the box following a shot that hit the far post.
WVU would answer at 33:10 with a goal from forward Megan Mischler. The freshman scored off a corner kick from midfielder Michelle Molinari.
Tied 1-1 at the half, West Virginia found the back of the net in the 72nd minute to take a 2-1 lead. Molinari began the play with a pass to midfielder Amanda Cicchini. Cicchini dribbled up the field and sent a tight pass to forward Deana Everrett who one-timed the ball from 16 yards out.
With less than eight minutes remaining, West Virginia made it 3-1 on a goal from midfielder Morgan Betscher. Betscher found an empty net on a save and deflection by Maryland’s goalkeeper on a Mischler shot attempt.
The Mountaineers out-shot the Terrapins 18-10 on the night.
